SGMA

STANDARDS THAT SEE EVERYONE.

Helping healthcare and
research reflect real-
world populations.

Through policy guidance, governance frameworks, and implementation
standards across the healthcare ecosystem.

Grounded in human rights principles. Built through published standards, global convenings, and

institutional partnerships.

GLOBAL CONVENINGS & IMPLEMENTATION
WHAT ARE POPULATION STANDARDS

Population standards are validated frameworks for how populations are defined, classified, and operationalized — across clinical research and healthcare systems globally.

OUR WORK.

RULES

01

Population Policy & Governance

SGMA develops governance frameworks, policy guidance, and the institutional architecture that defines how population standards are created, adopted, and enforced across the global healthcare ecosystem.

INFRASTRUCTURE

02

Population Standards & Infrastructure

SGMA develops, publishes, and maintains validated population standards frameworks — enabling sponsors, CROs, and healthcare institutions to implement rigorous, auditable data collection infrastructure.

EXECUTION

03

Workforce & Implementation

SGMA builds the workforce competency required to implement population standards at scale — through training, certification, and implementation guidance that operationalizes frameworks at the site, sponsor, and institutional level.

THE PROBLEM

This is a methodology gap — not a representation problem. SGMA was built to close it.

The data gap is a methodology failure.
Not a representation problem.

When population standards are absent from clinical research and healthcare governance, sponsors carry unquantified safety exposure, regulators receive incomplete evidence, and healthcare systems operate on data that does not accurately represent the patient populations under study.

This is a methodological gap.

It requires validated frameworks, governance infrastructure, and implementation guidance the field can cite, adopt, and build on.

SGMA exists to close this gap. Our methodology — proven through rigorous application in SOGI data collection and the inclusion of people living with HIV in clinical research — is designed to scale across populations, geographies, and therapeutic areas.

OUR FOUNDING STORY

We started as SGM Alliance. We became SGMA.

Before there were standards, there was a problem nobody was naming correctly. Watch our founding story.
